Headache Management

Headache Management

Headache is defined as pain in any part of the head including face & neck. There are more than 100 types of headaches – most of which are harmless and some are life-threatening. Headache can be classified as primary and secondary headaches. Primary headaches are responsible for more than 90% of all headache complaints in which tension-type headache and migraine are the commonest. Secondary headaches are usually caused by an underlying condition like meningitis or a brain tumor. Headaches may also be the cause of problems elsewhere in the head or neck.

At Citi Neuro Centre, our neurologists have experience caring for both common and complex headache disorders, with  well expertise in treating chronic migraine, tension headache, trigeminal neuralgia and neurologic causes of head pain. We work closely with other team members including neurosurgeons, psychiatrists and pain management specialists to provide our patients with comprehensive, tailored care.

Most patients with headache require treatment on an outpatient basis. Outpatient care begins with a thorough medical history. This will be followed by a complete neurological evaluation. Diagnostic testing already done is reviewed and additional tests and other referrals are asked for only if necessary. A CT/MRI scan is not needed in every patient with headache. After the initial interview, the scientific basis of your headache will be explained to you in a simple way, the preventive and acute treatment plan will also be discussed. Pharmacological treatment and lifestyle changes are advised based on the headache type.

TREATMENT

The complex nature of headache means that the treatments available are varied and differ from person to person. Once the cause of headache has been confirmed, our neurologists will be able to suggest ways in which you can manage the attacks. This may involve trying medication, advice on lifestyle, suggestions on how to cope with your symptoms, and the self-management of your particular experience with migraine to help minimise its impact upon your everyday life.

If your headache attacks cannot be managed in this way the doctor may prescribe preventative drugs, although this is not needed for the majority of people. In addition to medication, we offer interventional treatments for headache including triggerpoint injections, nerve blocks, and Botox injections.

Using innovative therapies and medications, our neurologists usually can provide substantial pain relief to patients. In rare cases when headache is a sign of a more serious problem, our multidisciplinary team of specialists ensures that patients get the most appropriate treatment.

Psychological treatments are basically considered in those patients who are unresponsive to the medication.
